Skin Care: My Journey, Tips + Tricks!

For years and years, I struggled with acne. I was always battling a breakout, and when a pimple would finally go away, it left behind dreaded dark spots for months. Olive skin has its perks, but that ain’t one of ‘em. Acne made me feel so… flawed. I spent thousands of dollars and countless hours trying yet another solution to clear it up and even worse, I was feeling constant waves of insecurity over it. There was a solid year in college I didn’t even feel comfortable leaving the house without makeup on, which in hindsight was definitely not helping my acne prone skin. The breakouts, bumps and spots continued even after college. I would NEVER let Scott see my skin in the morning because I was so embarrassed about my bare skin. Gah, it makes me want to cry just thinking about how insecure those pimples made me feel. Acne just makes you feel so icky and if you’re dealing with it, I can completely relate.

I Tried Everything

Literally everything. (Except for accutane, which I knew I would never try.)

First, I was influenced by all the skincare marketing magic that ropes you in when strollong the skin care aisle of local grocery and convenience stores. None of those products ever worked for me. In fact, most of them just made things worse. Next, I tried Proactiv with no luck. Then, my dermatologist prescribed me topical ointments that took weeks to begin working. I did see results eventually, but then out of nowhere, that regimine suddenly stopped working. UGH.

During this time of trial and error, I began to take note of how you can treat acne with your diet, so I tried going fully vegan, cut back on caffeine and sugar and low and behold…the breakouts remained a constant battle. Back to the dermo I went, where I was prescribed an antibiotic that began to compromise my immune system. THEN a doctor put me on Spironolactone, which is also used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure – insane. All from this never ending cycle of issues with fighting off acne. At that point, I was about to just wave the white flag and go on Accutane – and THAT is when I learned about NaturaCulina from one of my friends on Instagram.

What Finally Worked

First of all, This isn’t a sponsored post. I am sharing what finally helped me get rid of 95% of my acne after years of struggling and searching. I started using the 3-step Naturaculina and almost all of my skin cleared up – almost instantly. All of the other solutions I tried insisted that it takes weeks and sometimes months for acne to clear up, but my experience with Naturaculina was that the acne vanished quickly and stayed away for good. I still struggle with little bumps on my forehead from time to time, but that is due to a food allergy. At the same time I switched to NaturaCulina, I also began a full facial laser hair removal treatment, which has been a game changer in the overall improvement of my skin. After 6 rounds of facial laser hair removal, I switched to electrolysis treatments to remove the stubborn hairs for good. Additionally, to diminish of some of my skin discoloration from years of acne, I get 3 PRP facials a year. PRP is most commonly referred to as the “vampire” facial.


  1. When I wake up in the morning, I just rinse my face with filtered water. I only wash my face in the morning if it’s after a workout. The reason I avoid a morning wash if possible is so that my skin’s natural PH isn’t disrupted multiple times a day.
  2. At night, I use the NC pre-cleanse on a cotton pad until I COMPLETELY remove all makeup. This is a super important step! I normally have to go through 5 cotton pads to get it all off.
  3. For cleansing, I use the 3-step Botanical NaturaCulina or the Chamomile NaturaCulina line.
  4. I finish by applying rosehip oil to my chest and neck and gently swiping the NC caffeine eye cream under my eyes. Voila!


I LOVE FACIALS. If you’re a Charleston local, some of my favorites are from Ella Ora or MYLKBAR – both are located in Mount Pleasant, SC! These are my go-tos because unlike most facials, these are super moisturizing and do not strip my skin dry. It always leaves my feeling like I am GLOWING!

Trust me, I know it’s not an easy problem to solve and it can be super frustrating (and a lot of freakin’ wasted money). I wish skin was a one-size fits all thing, but we all know it’s not. The best advice I can give you is: stick with clean beauty, stay away from harsh medicines with negative side effects, and less is always more.
