Do you find yourself complaining about aches and pains you never felt before? Do you sometimes struggle to let things go and not worry about little things? Sometimes we feel and sound too much like our parents or grandparents far sooner than we really want. Looking and feeling young isn’t just a state of body—it’s a state of mind, too.

Check out these five research-based ways to look and feel younger. Remember, these simple, but effective strategies aren’t just for immediate change—they can keep you healthy for the long haul too.

Be positive.

Research shows that smiling reduces stress and gives you a boost of positivity. Not only will you feel younger, but you’ll look it, too. Researchers found that people who smile are often seen as younger than they actually are. Not surprisingly, then, people who frown appeared to be older than they really are.

When you are struggling to find positivity in the present moment, take a few deep breaths and think of something that makes you smile—a relaxing vacation, when you won an award, the first time you kissed your soul mate.

Eat healthy.

You are what you eat— it’s a cliche, but it’s true. How young you look and feel can be directly connected to the foods you eat. This doesn’t mean you have to give up all your guilty pleasures, but it does mean you need to practice moderation when it comes to refined sugar, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates.

If you need to get nutrients on the go, make healthy smoothies at home that you can take with you anywhere. Keep your pantry stocked with rice and pasta made from whole grains so you can enjoy affordable and hearty comfort foods, like stews, soups, sandwiches, and skillets. Look into one-pot meals for fuss-free meal prep.

Nourish your skin.

Protect your skin from the sun. The damage from ultraviolet rays can be harsh, but fortunately, it can also be reversible. While there are many good creams and lotions to try, what you put in your body impacts your skin, too.

First, always drink plenty of water. A hydrated body will do wonders for your wrinkles and complexion. Second, try a collagen supplement or drink to restore that youthful glow. You’ll not only see an improvement in your skin but also your hair and nails, too. Be sure to talk to your doctor before trying new supplements, though, especially if you are already on regular medication.

Stay in the present moment.

Feeling young isn’t just the way your body looks—it is also the way your mind feels. Keep your fun high to keep your stress—and the physical and mental impact of it—low.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to flip the switch is to try a mindfulness practice. Studies show that by training your mind to stay focused on what’s in front of you, your natural state of existence becomes happiness. You don’t worry about a past you cannot change, nor dread a future you cannot control.

Update your wardrobe.

Revamping your look can start, quite literally, in your closet. Enhance the grays, blacks, and blues with pops of color that compliment your features. Look for a sweater, scarf, or shirt that matches the color of your eyes. Toss out decades-old styles that are muting your personality and making you feel outdated.

Use a social media platform like Instagram or Pinterest to see what styles are trending for your body type. Remember, no matter your weight, height, or size, confidence is beautiful or handsome. Modernize your wardrobe in a way that makes you feel like you own the world.

We all know someone who seems to stay young and happy, even as years or even decades go by. Youthfulness is lit from within, but it isn’t anything special or hard to achieve. You, too, can discover the fountain of youth when you focus on things that make you feel young inside and out. Visit the Hushup X Hustle blog for more health, wellness, and lifestyle tips.
